Zapcat Rescue & Safety Team
Zapcat Rescue & Safety Team
Zapcat Rescue & Safety Team

No question about it they are arguably one of the best, Rescue & Safety Teams in the Powerboating world today.

Compared to many other classes Zapcat Racing not only has many more race teams but also the quantity of races held at very different venues and each location creating its own set of risks to be evaluated, assessed, eliminated or minimised.

2011 will see almost 200 + races run in breaking surf, in docks and along coasts across the UK.

Powerboat Racing is an inherently dangerous sport and probably still one of the most extreme watersports, but the combination of speed and relative danger always has a big appeal whether it is on land, air or sea.

Minimising the risks as well as managing the conditions in the Zapcat season is left to a team of very dedicated rescue and safety professionals, many of whom have been involved right from the creation of the series in the UK.

They have a wealth of knowledge between them that runs through from the rules and safety committees through to the on water team along with the back up support from the officials on land.

In recognition of their professionalism and the respect held by the race teams they were the first recipients of the Commando Trophy first presented in 2008 and enjoy the support and sponsorship from leading brands including HSA Europe, Gath, Typhoon and Bodyglove.

Meet the Team
Mick "Mav" - Race Director, OOD & Training Officer

A former back to back winner of the Zapcat National Championships & King of the Surf titles in '07 & '08.  Definitely a case of Poacher turned Gamekeeper.

As an OOD and Scrutineer Mick knows the rules inside out, as a past champion is very aware of what can or can't be done legally to the engines.  With a young family, on the water time is limited to training future race teams.  Mick is also very involved with the Powerboating committees of the RYA as well as the development of Zapcats as a sport.

Tom - RYA Safety Officer, IRB Helm & Rescue Team Trainer

Tom has been involved with Zapcat Racing since the start and is a RYA Advanced Powerboat & PWC instructor and also a RNLI trainer by profession, there is very little that escapes his attention on the water when piloting one of the Gemini Inshore Rescue Boats and he has seen and dealt with pretty much every incident at race events and as a volunteer at Calshot one of the busiest lifeboat stations in the UK.

In the off season you will find Tom axle deep in mud "off roading" or on the ski slopes and teaching the Rookie teams how to race safely.

"Daz" - K38 Rescue Driver, Rescue Swimmer & Team Trainer

A Safety & Rescue specialist who is totally at home in big surf. Daz has spent the last few years training RNLI beach lifeguards.  Recently awarded a medal for a cliff rescue in Newquay as a coastguard volunteer, he now lectures and teaches in rescue techniques - training safety teams across the UK.

Daz likes nothing better than coming home and grabbing his surf board even if it is just for that one wave or practising his technical rescue PWC skills in the biggest surf Newquay has to offer!  His recent K38 qualification is testament to that a very demading course aimed solely at rescue professionals who are capable of single handed rescues on a PWC in an ocean environment!

Glyn - RYA Medical Officer, Paramedic, IRB Helm & Swimmer

Affectionately known as "Rescue Hobbit" from his stature - he may be small but he is as tall as any of the other team members in the eyes of the race teams.

Glyn is an Advanced Powerboat and PWC Instructor as well as a very accomplished climber, windsurfer and canoeist and has taught courses in all disciplines and is also an essential member of the pre event set up team having been involved since the start of Zapcats in the UK - his ability to overcome logistical problems or create a temporary marina are legendary.

Neil - OOD (Officer of the Day) & IRB Helm

A former winner of the Mixed Championship and runner up in the Nationals in '06 - working hand in hand with the Safety Officers and the rest of the team, having one OOD who has raced is great but being fortunate enough to have two is fantastic as they have an uncanny knack of predicting when trouble may arise.

Neil spends his life outdoors professionally & personally teaching every activity pursuit imaginable including Powerboat instruction and then on his own time challenging himself, his wife and friends with more  mountains, sailing etc it doesn't matter as long as it is outdoors.

Aimee - Rescue Swimmer & IRB Helm

Is an Advanced Powerboat driver and RYA Level II instructor.  You are just as likely to find Aimee in a bar or club or up a glacier, in the surf or on the slopes somewhere across the globe. Over the next few months when not at race event she will be knee deep in wood shavings renovating her newly acquired boat.

Irrespective of the weather or how cold and wet she is she will always have a big smile and be ready to help out wherever needed.

Sloane - Paramedic & Rescue Swimmer

Where to start with Sloane's interests and qualifications?  Try volunteer RNLI crew, Inshore Lifeboat Helmsman, RNLI Flood Response Team and Ambulance Service!

Sloane is a relatively new but highly valued addition to the team along with her husband Martin.

If not at sea then it is out on the slopes snowboarding or partying to the best of the Indie bands. Living life to the max is Sloane's motto.

Martin - IRB Helm

One of the volunteer Coxswains of the Hastings Lifeboat, ILB Helm and Trainer assessor with the RNLI. Martin has been operating small boats around the south east coast for many years. RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor as well as a Commercially Endorsed Yachtmaster; he is a very useful addition to the safety team.

Martin spends his time with his wife Sloane and family mostly overseas either snowboarding or yachting.

"Damo" - IRB Helm & Rescue Swimmer

Calshot RNLI crew member and a pursuits instructor at the Calshot Activity Centre an outdoor centre for sailing, windsurfing, climbing, skiing, environmental and field studies. Damo has been learning the Zapcat "ropes" over the last three season filling in when more regular members have been unavailable and now has joined the team for his first full season.

Interests away from work include windsurfing and climbing and he will be tying the knot later this year.

Nikki - RYA Race Secretary

Nikki’s Zapcat career started after her brother Andy, needed a hand with the spares trailer at Littlehampton in 2004 and the rest they say is history. Helping with set-up and lap counting over the years, she trained as a Race Secretary in 2007, and tries to keep everyone within deadlines for race paperwork and licences.

When not helping organise the Zapcat National Championships or event managing Zapcat Experiences with Vortex Events ("does she have a life outside of Zapcats?") Nikki loves nothing more than catching up with her family & friends over a glass of Port!

"Richie" -  RYA Safety Officer in Training & Beach Boss

Richie a serving Royal Marine Officer and founder of the RM Zapcat Association, who has for the time being, replaced his orange race lid for his shiny new red Gath rescue lid. Unable to commit to racing full time this year and wanting to give some more Commandos the chance to race he has very willingly agreed to join the Rescue & Safety team as well as assist us in the running of Zapcat race events.

Richie was behind the creation of the Commandos Trophy and has been very much behind the development of the Services Championship and encouraging others, particularly the Royal Navy into Zapcats.

"Harri" - Lapcounter & Trainee RYA Official

Harri started Zapcat Racing in 2006 as co-pilot for her Dad, Pat. They completed two seasons before she decided to hand the co-piloting over to her younger brother, George. Still wanting to be involved in Zapcats, she started training at the end of last season. Harriet says “I’ve been very fortunate to have been rescued a few times by our Safety Team whilst racing, and I feel very proud and privileged to be training with them, even if it is on the dry land side of things”

Harri can be found, outside of racing, the length and breadth of the country enjoying various live music gigs and festivals.
